TMFF's newly created Archival Department is proud to present our first ever 'TMFF Retrospective'! Featuring student work from the 1970s-Present, this eight-film curation shows the visions of Toronto's youth across generations.

We are proud to present this event in a hybrid 16mm-Digital screening thanks to the hard work of the Film + Photography Preservation and Collections Management program. Many films in this programme have not screened since their release, and are real gems. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Archival Line Up

  • Snow What (1975) - dir. William Reeve 16mm

    A portrait of a ski hill being replenished with snow. A beautiful, wordless ballet of weather, machines, and workers against a psych-rock score.

  • Eddy (1977) - dir. Andrew Bialowas 16mm

    A documentary about a mute garbage man named Eddy. In a largely verité approach, Bialowas observes Eddy’s working life.

  • X-Walk (1985) - dir. Terry O’Brien 16mm

    A mockumentary about the struggles between the Canadian Union of Traffic Employees (C.U.T.E.) and the Canadian government during a strike of crossing guards in Toronto.

  • All Flesh is Grass (1988) - dir. Susan Oxtoby 16mm

    An associative collage of images from Susan Oxtoby’s journeys through Toronto and upstate New York.

  • Colourbars (2005) - dir. Timothy Moore

    The Colourbars prepare for a take in this animation-live action hybrid.

  • Captain Coulier: Space Explorer (2009) - dir. Lyndon Casey

    Captain Anthony Coulier casually leads his Canadian alien and robot crew through interstellar space.

  • Firecrackers (2013) - dir. Jasmin Mozaffari

    Two friends yearn to be free from their small Ontarian town.

  • Paradise Falls (2013) - dir. Graham Foy

    Two kids squat in an abandoned, magical mansion with a mysterious history, until they realize they are not alone.
